Over time, all software requires maintenance. It can be as simple as applying a patch or replacing a file or can be as complicated as an upgrade or migration. No matter what it is, it’s essential to keep your software current.
Usually, upgrades are handled as an “update-in-place,” which is the process of updating an existing SAS deployment to apply maintenance or add and update SAS products. The update modifies the current deployment rather than creating a new instance.
Migration in SAS terminology means creating a new SAS deployment based on an existing SAS deployment. A typical example would be migrating SAS 9.3 to SAS 9.4. Migration can also refer to taking a SAS installation from on-premise to the cloud or moving the SAS installation to a different operating system or hardware.
